  • Regarding the Pandemic

Unless you are a pirate hostage in Somalia, you definitely are aware of the swine flu we have contended with, especially here in Mexico. As an American living and teaching in Guadalajara, I thought I might address the situation with logic, information, and experience.
First of all, I went to nursing school, so I am quite aware of germs, how to wash my hands, etc. In case you do not know, soap cuts grease unless it is a disinfectant. The secret of keeping your hands clean is rubbing them for 20 seconds while you wash. It is the friction (heat) that really kills the bad guys. (So, wash and sing, “ Happy Birthday”, and you’ll be fine.)
Another thing I learned is that nasty microscopic entities love heat and humidity. Since I live in Guadalajara, Mexico, I live in basically a dry climate. Even in rainy season, there is not the humidity you would find in most places around the globe. The odds of getting “Montezuma’s revenge” is far more likely than a serious health problem unless you brought it with you.
Secondly, I would rather read a book than go dancing at the local disco or imbibe an alcoholic beverage at a bar. However, take a few precautions and you will fare well. You can always carry some hand disinfectant with you and you should be fine. Actually, the sickest I ever became was living in Florida, USA. Southern Florida is basically a swamp. (Alligators and mosquitoes included.) In Collier County, Florida, a hill is four feet above sea level. The humidity is heavy and continuous, while the “snowbirds” who come from the north every year during winter months bring their diseases with them….and share.
The bottom line is that I take the necessary precautions to avoid becoming ill. I wash my hands frequently, do not play “kissy face” with anyone and everyone, and try to avoid dangerous situations.
So far, we have done rather well and things are back to normal. We hope to keep it that way. I think Mexico did a good job in its precautions and transparency in this health crisis. In fact, nearly all countries are working together to prevent further spread of the flu and provide adequate health care and medicine. Thus, when we now are finally getting back to normal, we are still taking precautions, but, so far, most people are doing fine.
Am I afraid? No. Am I worried? No. Am I cautious? Yes. Remember the line from a rather well read book, “and this too shall pass”.

    • Hi Vera-Tiez,
Well, we all wixh the swine flu would just go away, but somehow I doubt it. Hopefully, using as much preventitive measures as we can will at least keep as many people healthy as possible.
